We present the experience using machine-learning denoising on animated feature films like Pixar's "Toy Story 4," Disney Animation's "Ralph Breaks the Internet," and Industrial Light & Magic's visual effects work. We discuss how we evolved the R&D code of last year's SIGGRAPH paper into a practical production tool.

Optimizing Rig Manipulation with GPU and Parallel Evaluation

10:45AM - 12:15PM

+ Google Calendar

Real-time performance can provide instant feedback to artists, allowing quick iterations and ultimately leading to better quality animation. This paper presents an approach that takes advantage of modern multi-core architectures and GPUs. Interactive performance is attained by building rigs that can be evaluated by efficiently leveraging the parallel processing hardware.

Optimizing Large Scale Crowds in "Ralph Breaks the Internet"

2:00PM - 3:30PM

The large scope of the shots in "Ralph Breaks the Internet" required the Crowd department to rethink their approach to populating scenes and extend their pipeline to support efficient level-of-detail based pose, reuse, and visibility culling.

Creating Ralphzilla: Moshpit, Skeleton Library, and Automation Framework

2:00PM - 3:30PM

+ Google Calendar

Composed of more than 550,000 crowd agents, Ralphzilla presented a huge technical and artistic challenge. We introduce a new crowd solver, Moshpit, which performs high-resolution, inter-body collision among crowd agents. We will also explain how Moshpit was incorporated into Disney’s Skeleton Library (SL) and proprietary pipeline automation framework.

Taming the Shadow Terminator

3:45PM - 5:15PM

+ Google Calendar

A longstanding problem with the use of shading normals is the discontinuity introduced into the cosine falloff at the shadow terminator. Our solution is to replace the cosine falloff with a geometrically derived shadowing function. Our solution is simple, robust, efficient, and production proven.
