Catching Up with the Animator John Kahrs
February 2, 2013
John Kahrs is a Disney animator and the director of the Oscar-nominated animated short film “Paperman,” which is distinctive for its melding of traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated animation techniques.
I’m digging into old-fashioned stories like “The Prisoner of Zenda,” “Heidi” and “Captains Courageous.” I mean, who reads “Heidi”? But there’s a reason these stories are still around. It’s because they’re good — richly told and full of emotion. Whenever I read something, I’m picturing it in my head like a movie. If the worlds are fully realized in the text, you can have those wonderful visuals. I think everybody has a little bit of the director in them, envisioning these stories.
