Editorial is where the entire film is
assembled. The editor begins work on the film with the editing
together of the storyboards to make the story reel. This includes
scratch dialog with temp music and sound effects and is based off the
original pitch from the story department and the directors. This
first pass sets up the timing and pace of the film and defines what the
film will be. It also serves as the approval step fro the
story. As sequences move from story through layout, the work reel
evolves from the story reel. The work reel represents the most
current version of the film, shot for shot, but still with scratch
dialog and sound. After voice talent is recorded for the
characters in the film the work reel is re-edited with the new dialog
and animation can begin. Eventually as the film passes from
animation through lighting and then shot finalling and effects, the
latest output of each department is swapped into the work reel.
Concurrently, the music is scored and recorded and sound designers
create all the sound effects for the film. The editor then
assembles all the final elements to create the film in its final form.
