The Art Department
is responsible for conceptualizing and executing the
unique look and feel of each of our animated films. From the
earliest
stages of a film's conception artists contribute sketches and paintings
in a variety of media to explore and refine style, locations,
characters, staging, color and mood. It's necessarily a chaotic
process as the artists consider visual ideas coming from all
departments, the director and the art director. Development
artists
can have a profound influence on a film as their free-form exploration
inspires fresh thinking about everything from character's personalities
to the story itself. As production nears, the Art Department
prepares
documents for other departments working "downstream" detailing exact
character, set and prop design, along with guides for the use of color
and mood for each sequence. At Disney the department has
also
produced graphic design work and matte paintings for production.
