A Conceptual Framework for Procedural Animation

9:00AM - 10:30AM

+ Google Calendar

Conceptual Framework for Procedural Animation (CFPA) provides guidelines for designing procedural animation timings. It allows users to set up procedural animation rigs and tools in a highly organized manner by reducing complexity. It also helps users make their procedural animation developments more modularized, shareable, and compatible.

Hierarchical Controls for Art-Directed Hair at Disney

2:00PM - 3:30PM

+ Google Calendar

Creating appealing shapes of characters' hair while maintaining the organic motion from physical simulation is challenging in Disney’s very stylized animated worlds. This talk describes the introduction of hierarchical sculpting controls into our hair pipeline and presents tools for creating and manipulating this consistent structure to achieve art-directed hair motion.

Plausible Iris Caustics and Limbal Arc Rendering

2:00PM - 3:30PM

+ Google Calendar

We apply anterior segment tomography measurements from contact lens research to photo-realistic eye rendering. We improve on existing eye geometric models and demonstrate the advantage of using a more accurate iris depth. We introduce a practical method for automatically rendering the limbal arc as an intrinsic part of sclerotic scattering.

The Handiwork Behind 'Olaf's Frozen Adventure'

3:45PM - 5:15PM

+ Google Calendar

Walt Disney Animation Studios brings you a look into the visual and technical challenges the production team faced in creating the holiday featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” and how 2D techniques were implemented to solve visual production challenges throughout design and production.

Design and Implementation of Modern Production Renderers

3:45PM - 5:15PM

+ Google Calendar

A discussion among developers of five of the most significant production renderers for film, going into technical detail about the design goals and implementations of their renderers and comparing their respective designs.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet”: Visualizing the Internet

10:45AM - 12:15PM

+ Google Calendar

In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Vanellope von Shweetz and Wreck-It Ralph leave Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet on a quest to save Vanellope’s video game. Building the metropolis of the internet was no small feat: its smallest buildings are the size of the Empire State Building, and tens of thousands of dynamic, digital signs can be seen in one city shot. The world then needed to be populated with characters, ranging from the everyday citizens of the internet - netizens - to service workers and algorithms who run the world wide web. Throughout the making of the film, the production team was challenged to push the boundaries both artistically and technically in visualizing a world that is ever-changing and seemingly endless - a concept as familiar as the internet executed in a way that has never been seen before.
