Meet Earl

Supervising Music Editor
How did you get started at Disney Animation?

A co-worker of mine recommended me to the head of post production back in 1993, and after working on a few small Fantasia 2000 assignments, I was brought on to help on Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and eventually given a permanent role on Hercules. That was my first of many projects working with Alan Menken here, and that led to work with many other songwriters as well, such as Phil Collins, Randy Newman, Robert and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Tell us about your role at Disney Animation.

I am the Supervising Music Editor here, working with a team of 3 other music editors. We work with every project, providing music editorial needs throughout production, from early story reels to our final dubbing mixes. We work closely with the show's editors and directors, creating a temporary music soundtrack for every sequence and every screening we have. This "temp score" can often serve as a blueprint of musical tone and energy for the score composers that are hired to write the final music for each project.

I work closely with all our songwriters, from the beginnings of each production, starting with the formation and editing of early demos, all the way through arrangements and orchestration, until the final recording and mixing of our songs. We also work with all the score composers that breath musical life into our films.

What do you like about working at Disney Animation?

It is an art form truly collaborative in nature and it's wonderful to develop these projects under one roof, side by side with writers, story artists, editors and directors. Working with the finest songwriters and score composers in the world is such a privilege and joy. Disney prides itself in crafting timeless music, and it is so rewarding to be a part of that process.

What is the most memorable Disney Animation project you have contributed to and why?

Hard to say one! Hercules because it was my first full experience working on a Disney musical. Tangled because it's hard-earned success helped launch a new golden age of animation here at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Moana because of it's wonderfully exotic world and the complex challenges of working with 3 different songwriters in 3 different parts of the world.

Pour all your creativity into what's right in front of you; some day you will look back at a career journey that is uniquely your own. No way did I imagine myself working here at Disney Animation when I was 13 and making super-8 films!

What was your favorite Disney movie growing up, and why?

I was fascinated with Fantasia and the marriage of classical music and animation. I grew up playing violin in orchestras and was entranced at how Disney embraced each selection of music with unique artistry and reverence. As you can imagine, I was thrilled to help out with some music editing work on Fantasia 2000!

Anything else we should know?

The old Hollywood studio system of the 20th century is a distant memory - when every aspect of film production, from writing scripts, to filming and production on sound stages, to editing, post production and sound mixing were all done on one studio lot. Most studios even had their own orchestra on their lot! Walt Disney Animation Studios is a rare gem, because we are one of the last studios like that - having every single part of our animation process done under one roof - side by side with our filmmaking family bringing our movies to life!
