Meet Nicole

Head of Story
How did you get started at Disney Animation?

I started as a summer intern for Visual Development, then went through the Story Apprentice program.

Tell us about your role at Disney Animation.

I get to be involved in the beginning stages of your movies generating ideas and drawings to help form our new characters and stories through storyboards supporting director's visions and helping them come alive. The story team works closely with directors and writers to illustrate the movie. Through boards we help visualize our films and try to find moments that will make people fall in love with our characters.

What do you like about working at Disney Animation?

Love the incredibly talented, smart and funny people I get to work with every day and knowing that we will put something into the world that will be enjoyed by many people.

What is the most memorable Disney Animation project you have contributed to and why?

Winnie the Pooh because it was a smaller film with wonderful directors, Steve Anderson, Don Hall and a great story team. There was no writer attached to the film so we had a rare opportunity to write our own scenes which was incredibly rewarding to see in the final film. It was also really exciting to see the 2d animation for these classic characters.

What was your favorite Disney movie growing up, and why?

I was a big Disney fan and watched them all, but seeing The Little Mermaid and The Lion King in theaters as a young kid really stayed with me. The music was so powerful and the stories made a lasting impression. At the time I didn't know I would go into animation, but they inspired me to draw those characters.

Where do you draw creative inspiration from?

People watching, funny moments in life, movies and TV, and random videos. You never know what odd fact or thing that you saw might work its way into one of our films. If I see an interesting person or interaction I'll tuck it away in my mind because there might be a moment in the story room or in boards where It will be useful.
